Η Κλανιόλα — Το απίστευτο μυστικό των επτανησιακών κρεβατιών

Αν νομίζετε πως η κλανιόλα ήταν ένα απλό, πρόχειρο αντικείμενο που κάποιος έφτιαξε για να αντιμετωπίσει μια… δύσκολη στιγμή, κάνετε λάθος.

Στα Επτάνησα η ιστορία της είναι πολύ πιο ενδιαφέρουσα.

Για να την καταλάβουμε, πρέπει να ταξιδέψουμε αρκετά χρόνια πίσω, σε μια εποχή που τα Επτάνησα είχαν τον δικό τους ιδιαίτερο χαρακτήρα.

Κέρκυρα, Ζάκυνθος, Κεφαλονιά, Λευκάδα…

Νησιά με έντονη βενετσιάνικη επιρροή, αρχοντικά σπίτια, μεγάλες οικογένειες και τους περίφημους Κόντηδες των Επτανήσων.

Στα σπίτια των πιο εύπορων οικογενειών υπήρχαν αντικείμενα που σήμερα μας φαίνονται απίστευτα. Και ανάμεσα σε αυτά υπήρχε και ένα μικρό «σύστημα εξαερισμού» του κρεβατιού.

Η κλανιόλα.

Η κατασκευή της ήταν απλή αλλά ευφυής για την εποχή.

Ένα χωνί και ένας μακρύς σωλήνας, συνήθως από ύφασμα ή δέρμα, ενώ υπήρχαν ακόμη και πιο πολυτελείς ασημένιες εκδοχές.

Το χωνί τοποθετούνταν κάτω από τα σκεπάσματα και ο σωλήνας οδηγούσε τις δυσάρεστες αναθυμιάσεις έξω από το δωμάτιο. Σε ορισμένες περιγραφές μάλιστα αναφέρεται ότι υπήρχε ειδική οπή στον τοίχο για τον σκοπό αυτό, ενώ στα πιο απλά σπίτια ο σωλήνας μπορούσε να οδηγεί προς το παράθυρο.

Και εδώ αρχίζει το πραγματικά ενδιαφέρον κομμάτι.

Η κλανιόλα δεν ήταν απλώς ένα αντικείμενο που κάποιος αγόραζε αν το χρειαζόταν.

Οι πηγές που αναφέρονται στην επτανησιακή παράδοση τη συνδέουν με τα προικοσύμφωνα και με τον εξοπλισμό του νυφικού κρεβατιού. Μαζί με τα σεντόνια, τα μαξιλάρια, το κρεβάτι και τα υπόλοιπα απαραίτητα του νοικοκυριού, αναφέρεται και η κλανιόλα.

Με λίγα λόγια…

Η νύφη μπορούσε να φύγει από το πατρικό της για να πάει στο σπίτι του γαμπρού και μαζί με την προίκα της να πάρει και το απαραίτητο εξάρτημα για τον… νυχτερινό εξαερισμό του συζυγικού κρεβατιού.

Και αυτό μας δίνει μια μοναδική εικόνα της καθημερινής ζωής εκείνης της εποχής.

Γιατί σήμερα όταν ακούμε τη λέξη «προίκα», φανταζόμαστε κεντήματα, σεντόνια, πιάτα, κατσαρόλες και πολύτιμα αντικείμενα.

Στα παλιά επτανησιακά σπίτια όμως η προίκα ήταν πολύ πιο λεπτομερής.

Υπήρχε ακόμη και πρόβλεψη για την άνεση του κρεβατιού.

Και μέσα σε αυτή την παράξενη αλλά απολύτως πρακτική συλλογή αντικειμένων, η κλανιόλα είχε τη δική της θέση.

Και επειδή μιλάμε για τα Επτάνησα και για τους Κόντηδες, υπάρχει και μια ακόμη ενδιαφέρουσα λεπτομέρεια.

Η κλανιόλα δεν περιοριζόταν απαραίτητα στις απλές και φτηνές κατασκευές.

Υπήρχαν και ασημένιες.

Και αυτό από μόνο του μας δείχνει ότι ακόμη και ένα αντικείμενο με τόσο… ταπεινή αποστολή μπορούσε να αποκτήσει χαρακτήρα πολυτελείας.

Γιατί όταν η καθημερινότητα συναντούσε την αρχοντιά, ακόμη και η κλανιόλα μπορούσε να γίνει… αριστοκρατική.

Υπάρχει μάλιστα ένας μεταγενέστερος ισχυρισμός που συνδέει τέτοιου είδους πολυτελείς κλανιόλες ακόμη και με βασιλικά στρώματα, με αναφορά σε μια υποτιθέμενη ασημένια κλανιόλα του βασιλιά Γεωργίου Β΄, διακοσμημένη με βασιλικό οικόσημο.

Όμως εδώ χρειάζεται μια μικρή επιφύλαξη.

Η ύπαρξη ασημένιων κλανιόλων αναφέρεται στις πηγές, όμως τη συγκεκριμένη ιστορία για τον Γεώργιο Β΄ δεν μπόρεσα να τη βρω τεκμηριωμένη σε αξιόπιστη ιστορική πηγή.

Κι έτσι, καλύτερα να την κρατήσουμε ως ιστορία ή θρύλο που έχει κυκλοφορήσει, όχι ως βεβαιωμένο γεγονός.

Και ίσως αυτό κάνει την κλανιόλα ακόμη πιο ενδιαφέρουσα.

Γιατί πίσω από ένα αντικείμενο που σήμερα προκαλεί γέλιο, κρύβεται ένας ολόκληρος κόσμος.

Τα Επτάνησα των Κόντηδων.

Τα παλιά αρχοντικά.

Οι προίκες.

Τα μεγάλα συζυγικά κρεβάτια.

Οι συνήθειες μιας κοινωνίας που σήμερα μοιάζει μακρινή.

Και μέσα σε όλα αυτά, ένα μικρό χωνί με έναν σωλήνα που είχε έναν πολύ συγκεκριμένο σκοπό.

Να κάνει τη ζωή λίγο πιο… ευχάριστη.

Γιατί τελικά η ιστορία δεν γράφεται μόνο με βασιλιάδες, πολέμους και μεγάλες μάχες.

Γράφεται και μέσα στα σπίτια.

Στα αντικείμενα που χρησιμοποιούσαν οι άνθρωποι κάθε μέρα.

Και μερικές φορές, η ιστορία μπορεί να κρύβεται σε ένα αντικείμενο που σήμερα κανείς δεν θα περίμενε να βρει μέσα σε μια προίκα.

Την κλανιόλα.

If you think that the klaniola was simply a crude, improvised object that someone came up with to deal with a… difficult moment, you’re wrong.

In the Ionian Islands, its story is much more interesting.

To understand it, we have to travel several years back in time, to an era when the Ionian Islands had their own distinctive character.

Corfu, Zakynthos, Kefalonia, Lefkada…

Islands with a strong Venetian influence, grand mansions, powerful families, and the famous Kontides of the Ionian Islands.

In the homes of the wealthier families, there were objects that would seem unbelievable to us today. And among them was a small “ventilation system” for the bed.

The klaniola.

Its construction was simple, but remarkably clever for its time.

A funnel and a long tube, usually made of fabric or leather, while there were even more luxurious silver versions.

The funnel was placed under the bedcovers, and the tube carried the unpleasant fumes outside the room. Some accounts even mention that there was a special opening in the wall for this purpose, while in simpler homes the tube could lead toward the window.

And this is where things get really interesting.

The klaniola was not simply an object that someone bought if they happened to need one.

Sources referring to Ionian tradition connect it with marriage dowry agreements and with the furnishings of the bride’s bed. Along with the sheets, pillows, bed, and other household essentials, the klaniola is also mentioned.

In other words…

A bride could leave her parents’ home to go to her husband’s house and, along with her dowry, take with her the essential piece of equipment for… the nighttime ventilation of the marital bed.

And this gives us a unique glimpse into everyday life in that era.

Because today, when we hear the word “dowry,” we imagine embroidery, sheets, dishes, pots, and valuable household objects.

But in the old Ionian homes, the dowry was much more detailed.

There was even provision for the comfort of the bed.

And within this strange but perfectly practical collection of household items, the klaniola had its own place.

And because we are talking about the Ionian Islands and the Kontides, there is another interesting detail.

The klaniola was not necessarily limited to simple and inexpensive constructions.

There were silver ones too.

And that alone shows us that even an object with such a… humble purpose could acquire a luxurious character.

Because when everyday life met aristocratic elegance, even a klaniola could become… aristocratic.

There is even a later claim connecting such luxurious klaniolas with royal beds, including a supposed silver klaniola belonging to King George II, decorated with a royal coat of arms.

But here we need to add a small note of caution.

The existence of silver klaniolas is mentioned in sources, but I have not been able to find the specific story about George II documented in a reliable historical source.

So it is better to treat it as a story or legend that has circulated, rather than as a confirmed historical fact.

And perhaps that makes the klaniola even more interesting.

Because behind an object that makes us laugh today, there is an entire world.

The Ionian Islands of the Kontides.

The old aristocratic mansions.

The dowries.

The large marital beds.

The customs of a society that today seems so distant.

And in the middle of all this, a small funnel with a tube that had one very specific purpose.

To make life a little more… pleasant.

Because in the end, history is not written only through kings, wars, and great battles.

It is also written inside people’s homes.

In the objects they used every day.

And sometimes, history can be hiding inside an object that nobody today would expect to find among the contents of a dowry.
